Earl Cecil Scruggs Obituary, Death – 50-Year-Old Pedestrian in Wheelchair Killed in Indianapolis Hit-and-Run Crash

Family, friends, and members of the Indianapolis community are mourning the tragic death of 50-year-old Earl Cecil Scruggs, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the near south side of Indianapolis.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called Sunday around 10 p.m. to the intersection of East Raymond and Shelby Streets following reports of a pedestrian-involved crash. When officers arrived, they found a man in a wheelchair who had suffered severe injuries.

Scruggs was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but he later died as a result of his injuries. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity.

Investigators say the driver involved in the crash did not stop at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that Scruggs was in a median when he was struck by a vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing a white pickup truck hit the man and flee westbound on Raymond Street immediately after the collision.

Police have launched an active investigation and are working to identify and locate the driver responsible. Detectives are currently reviewing witness statements and examining any available surveillance footage from the surrounding area.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding a suspect or possible charges as the search for the vehicle continues.

The fatal crash adds to growing concerns about safety along Raymond Street, where officials have reported multiple serious injury and fatal crashes in recent months.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue efforts to bring answers and accountability in the case.
